About this rug

A palace-scale antique carpet from North India, woven around 1900 in Agra or Amritsar after the celebrated Safavid silk Kashan carpets of the 16th century. A soft rose field holds an all-over lattice of blossoms and palmettes, punctuated by a woven inscription panel at one end. The deep indigo border is filled with bold saffron and rose palmettes, edged with golden guard stripes. Carpets of this size and age, made for the great houses of the British Raj and Europe, are rarely found in such good condition.
